The final match in the Rutland and Stamford Mixed League for Uppingham, was an always hard night, away at Welland Valley. With Welland Valley, vying for the title with Mars and Pearl, and only having lost once so far this season (away at Pearl), they started as favourites for the game.
Uppingham however, have never been ones to lie down and roll over. The tone of the match was set in the first three games on court, with Pam and Mark stepping up and taking a great win against Welland Valleys number one pairing of Jill and James, in three hard fought ends. It went down to the wire with Uppinghams number one pairing coming away with a 22 – 20 win in the third end! This set them up nicely, and they went on to win all three.
Paul and Helen had a much easier time winning their first game to 14 and 9. They also beat Welland Valleys third pairing in straight games, but came up a little short against Jill and James, going down to 18 and 17.
Peter and Sian, on the other hand, showed that when they are good they are good, but when they are bad, they are bad! Having strolled to a very comfortable first end win to 12 against their first opponents, they then went on to lose all three! Not a good night for Uppinghams third pairing. They will be back!
Well played to all, a really good win.
