Following the disappointment of the Pearl defeat the previous week it was important for the side to put that result behind them and secure points against Welland Valley A. These fixtures have been typically very close over the years but with strong pairings representing Uppingham there was every chance that they would be victorious particularly on home courts. As with any fixture, the 1st round is so important in terms of winning against the opposition’s equivalent pair, so it provided a positive barometer to the rest of the match when Uppingham took and early 3 nil lead. Mark and Pam were particularly convincing against WV’s no1 pair, a pair that they had lost to previously this season, winning to 13 and 14. Sandy, fresh faced from the French Alps partnered Paul who, in typical Paul Callow fashion, ensured his game was as tight as possible, going to 3 ends. Peter continued his comeback from injury with team captain Sian and took their rubber against WV’s 3rd pair convincingly to 10 and 4.
Uppingham continued to win rubbers, finally securing a convincing 8:1 win with Peter and Sian unlucky to lose out to WV’s 2nd pair to 17 and 19. Paul continued to ensure both he and Sandy got value for their money with a further 3 ender, finally overcoming WV’s 1st pair 21:18, 20:22, 21:17. Pam and Mark had a rare but welcomed 3 from 3, conceding only 56 points for the match. Having played WV A many times over the years this was the 1st time that Uppingham had managed to defeat their very stong 1st pair in all 3 rubbers and shows positive signs of progress.
This was a great win and will certainly help in keeping the side in the top division for next year…next objective to overcome Mars and get as close to Pearl as possible.
