Played 5, Won 3, Lost 2.
Apologies for the ‘quiet’ start to the season on the results front. Let me try and make up for it in one go…
The first match of the season, witnessed the Rutland Mixed team welcome Rockingham to Uppingham on the first of many thursday match nights. What followed was a hard fought 7 – 2 victory, with Sian and Peter picking up all three, and the pairs of Matt S and Helen, and Pam and Mark picking up two each. It’s always a pleasure to welcome Rockingham, as they play the game with the right spirit and are good company.
The following week, the newly promoted Mens 4’s travelled to Jack Hunt for the first game in Division 1 of the Hunts and Peterborough League. The match saw the competitive debuts for Uppingham of Anthony and Alex. A tough first outing for the guys against seasoned and very proficient opponents ended with a 6 – 0 defeat. The score not reflecting the effort and competitve games by the boys. Well done to the ‘new caps’.
Another defeat followed the following day for the Rutland Mixed side away at Welland Valley. An 8 – 1 loss was hard to swallow, given that the same fixture last year was a 5 – 4 reverse, with none of our pairs even picking up and end! The side was thoroughly outplayed and Welland Valley deserved the spoils.
The Mens 6, Hunts and Peterborough swiftly followed for thier first match in Division 2. Whaplode Drove made the long journey to Uppingham. Following some tough games, particularly for Peter A and Pete D, who lost their first game 24 – 22, 21 -23 and 20 – 22 in a little under 45 mins to Whaplode’s best pairing, Uppingham sent their Mens team home staring down the barrel of a 7 – 2 defeat. Whaplode were the only team to beat our Mixed side last term, so this was a good return.
Finally, a very, very speacial mention for the Ladies team, who travelled to Whaplode Drove this evening (Wednesday 2nd Oct). Sian, Helen, Wen and Steph created a little bit of club history tonight, with the first ever away win for a ladies team from Uppingham. Whaplode is a tough venue to visit, as they have voiciferous support in a difficult venue. Home advantage is very important, but the ladies overturned it, and came away with a fantastic 5 – 1 win. Well done indeed ladies, a marvellous result.
Two more matches this week will see Apollo visit for a Mens 4, and the Hunts and Peterborough Mixed team start their Division 1 campaign away at Jack Hunt this Sunday. Good luck to all.
