Our end of season round up saw the annual awards for ‘Player’s Player’ and ‘Most Improved Player’ of the year
Players’s Player of the Year
As usual our members voted to who they felt deserved to receive this coveted award. Over 25 votes were cast with several nominations being named…. clearly we have some very popular people at the club ! This year, a first I think, two players received the same number of votes who have jointly been awarded the accolade.
Congratulations to Jack and Eleanor
Most Improved Player of the Year
This award is nominated by the committee who they believe has shown the biggest improvement through out the year in their individual form.
This year Eleanor has shown significant improvements in her game and adapted well to playing with other players at the club and more recently playing in the mixed team.
We look forward to seeing this continuing into the 2016/17 season
Congratulations to Eleanor for this award and for winning the ‘Double’ !!
Hope you all enjoyed the handicap tournament this year, and what a bumper turn out ……. 34 in total !!
The format was the same as previous years with round robin pools leading to the knock out stages. The evening gave us all the opportunity to have fun, socialise off court and of course play some competitive badminton.
The pools saw some extremely close games resulting in very narrow margins for selection to the knock out stages.
This year’s final was between Clinton and Gail against Wen and Kelly. The handicaping throughout the tournament proved accurate in most cases (thanks to Mark and Mike) with the final being no exception, with the match going to the wire. In the end Clinton and Gail were victorious by the closest of margins winning 21-19.
Well done to our runners up, Wen and Kelly for providing a close run final and congratulations to Clinton and Gail winners of the Ellie McAusland Trophy for 2016
Yet another season has passed too quickly, it doesn’t seem that long since we were announcing the start of the season.
To mark the end of the 2015/16 season and before we all get involved with our summer activities, we have our usual gatherings.
AGM – Don Paddy’s Uppingham Square – Tuesday 10th May at 7.30pm
We will be holding our Annual General Meeting to take stock of this season and plan towards next year. I encourage you all to attend (supper included, to help entice you !) For those who haven’t previously attended, its held in an informal setting and provides the essential forum to report on 2015/16 and debate how we can try to continually improve UHBC.
Our constitution dictates that each year the committee stand down and the re-election of new officers is carried out. So if you have time, passion and commitment to badminton and our club please do consider if you would like to actively support the club in one of these roles. Please see our minutes of last years AGM and a copy of the draft agenda for this year.
End of season Party – The Grainstore Oakham – Friday 20th May at 7.30pm
Peter A has again kindly offered to host our annual end of season party at The Grainstore, its becoming a tradition !
It’s a fun night with food and drinks and chance for us all to let our hair down and glam up. (Burbs is banned from eating pickled onions this year !!) It’s a great night and hopefully you will all be able to make it.
See you all at the end of season handicap tournament next Tuesday 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. We have a bumper entry this year – 36 !! so please try and arrive on time to allow us to get through all the matches before the sports centre closes !
Peter as league secretary has recently published the latest league tables for the Hunts and Peterborough league. Whilst there are a few completed match results to be added and a few final matches to be played before the end of season, you will be able to see that the teams have maintained their division status with the mixed team providing an outstanding result currently lying second.
Please click on the link for the current league table March 2016
The final league positions will be published at the end of the season.
As we approach the end of the season I’m delighted to advise you that Uppingham Hill Badminton Club will running our annual handicap tournament for the 4th year on Tuesday 26th April, our final night of the season. Last year we had in excess of 20 players, using all courts with Pam Giblin and John Husk coming up trumps as eventual winners. The aim of the event is about enjoyment and to try and achieve as big a turnout as possible on our final night of the season.
For those new (or with short memories) everyone who enters gets a handicap with the view to leveling all players regardless of ability. The range last year was from -3 to +12 which in a 1 off game to 21 gives everyone a chance. We will aim for groups of 4 again so that everyone has the opportunity to play 3 games with a different partner each game, with the group winner and runner up qualifying for the knock-out phase. Once we reach this stage then pairs will be established right through to the final.
We are looking to repeat the good fun had from the last 3 years which will hopefully result in 2 new winners, or can Pam and John defend their title ? The handicapping and draw will be completed by 20th April, so could we please have all entrants by the club night of Tuesday 19th April AT THE LATEST. Please register your interest by completing the sheet on the notice board at club or emailing Mike Webster if you will not be at club over the two weeks.
Good luck and look forward to a healthy entry list
The Hunts and Peterborough League has issued an interim league table which provides an indication of overall positions at the end of November 2015. As some clubs have played more fixtures than others so it should be viewed as indicative, but allows us to see and compare match results.
Many of you will be aware of the challenges we have been facing with our ladies team this year, with difficulties with fixture dates/ scheduling, availability of players for matches and more recently the resignation of our ladies captain. Given the above and our unsuccessful attempts to recruit a new ladies captain for the second half of the season we have reluctantly had to pull out of the ladies division of the league for this season. This was a difficult decision for the committee but one that was necessary to be fair to the other teams in the league and to allow the league to reschedule fixtures for the remaining half of the year.
It’s nearly Christmas with only nine more sleeps to go before Santa arrives !
We have one more club night (22nd December) before we finish for the festive seasonal break.
To join in the festive fun there will be nibbles and mince pies and don’t forget your christmas hats!
Look forward to seeing you all next week
Our Club night recommences on Tuesday 5th January 2016
Merry Christmas to you all and here’s to happy an prosperous (and successful) new year
Last week saw a hat trick of wins from our teams in the R+S and H+P Leagues
Monday away at Rockingham saw the mixed team pulled off an impressive 8-1 win to start the ball rolling
The following evening with another mixed victory away at Stamford in a convincing 7-2 win
Together with our Ladies 4 who got their season off to a cracker with a 6-0 win
Well done to all
The 2015/16 season is now in full swing and the teams have a few successes under their belts.
I would like to welcome all our new members and visitors who have been enjoying our splendid facilities and hopefully friendly atmosphere and hope you make the most of our club nights.
It really has been a great start to the season with out Tuesday night sessions attended attended by virtually all our members. Last week I counted 24 men and 12 ladies, what a turn out ! and with hardly any off court time – thanks to our peg board monitors !
One of our visitors from another club (such is our appeal it would seem) commented ……. ” what a friendly club” and “I’ve never seen so many ladies playing on a single night” …….. go girls !
We are very fortunate to have such a buoyant club offering great social and team play.
It’s all down to you …….. keep it up 🙂
I’m sure you are all aware that the new season begins on Tuesday 1st September
It ‘s time to dust off those rackets and ensure the final plans to your new fitness regimes are coming to a crescendo in anticipation of the start of the season !
For those of you on the competitive side of badminton ( isn’t that all of us !) we have the matches to look forward to in both the Hunts and Peterborough league as well as the Rutland and Stamford league. And of course we have our weekly club nights for those whom winning isn’t everything……… to have enjoyable games and opportunities to improve our skills and technique.
I hope you are looking forward to the season and that we have a successful and fun filled year.
