Arriving at Bushfields at 11am on a Sunday morning may not be everyones idea of good time, but the team from Uppingham took it in their stride and turned out ready to do battle with the guys from Apollo, with smiles on their faces and cheer in their hearts!
With two new pairings on court, there was potential to slip on a banana skin. Mark and Paul soon steadied the ship, easing to a comfortable win against their opposite numbers. Cheered on by his wife and young boys, Sherman, sporting a questionable choice of outfit, took to the court with Peter for their first match together in ten years! Initially displaying great form the pair eased away from Apollos best pair to win the first end to 13. This didn’t last long, as the Apollo pairing stepped up their game to win 2 – 1.
Another new pair, both making their debuts for the H&P side, of Matt Mercer and Jack nervously stepped on court, after watching the other two pairs play, and proceeded to blow their opponents out of the water, winning comfortably to 10 and 7. A quite brilliant debut lads.
With nerves calmed, the next three matches all went the way of Uppingham in straight games, giving the away side an unassailble lead of 5 – 1. With everyone relaxed, Mark and Paul, eased past their final opponents, with Sherman and Peter doing the same.
Everyone, then settled in to watch the final game, with Matt and Jack taking on Apollos best pairing. They lost a battling first end to 13, despite some great serving and all round play. This, however, did not deter them, and they quickly opened up a decisive lead in game two, taking it 22 – 20. With applause ringing in their ears from the away support, they stepped on for their final end. Sadly the mixture of power and experience from the Apollo players proved just a little too much on this occasion, and they pulled away to win to 11. A great debut and really well played gents.
Well done all concerned and a big thankyou for turning out on a Sunday morning.
